July 2008

BEAUFORT BOAT & DOCK SUPPLY is located on Ribaut Rd., in Port Royal. Looking for bait & tackle? They've got lots to choose from & a full variety of live bait. If you’re fixing &/or repairing a trailer, dock or deck, you'll find just what you need at Beaufort Boat & Dock Supply. The Cobia action was really good though some say it was slower at the start of the run this year. Still, some big Cobia were taken & you can still get in on the action until the end of June. Offshore, the King Mackerel bite is on. Trolling ballyhoo should be effective at about 60 feet, just 14 miles out. Offshore bottom fishing has picked up with good catches of vermilion snapper, triggerfish, black sea bass and grunts. It’s very productive fishing for redfish and whiting, with flounder and trout still being taken. Schools of blues are moving in near shore waters and sheepshead catches continue to be good. Fine catches of bull dolphin have been reported, while the Gulf Stream has been the place to go for wahoo and yellow fin tuna and larger bluefish. Some good bluefish and Spanish mackerel can be caught off Bay Point in Port Royal Sound. “Be safe on the water & have a safe 4th of July!”

Check out the results & pictures of the Cobia Tournament sponsored by Lowcountry Marine Supply in this section of the magazine. Cobia action continues to be strong in all of our near shore, inshore waters & rivers. It will slow in early July. Of course live eels and cut herring is still the bait of choice. The most successful anglers employ chum or menhaden oil to attract the game fish. It will also attract sharks. Some really big Cobia have been taken near the Broad River Bridge. With so many boats crowded into the river, anglers seeking solitude should try St. Helena Sound. Another good spot you might try is anchoring near marker No. 12 where the Ashepoo River empties into the sound. Tony & his crew at LOWCOUNTRY MARINE SUPPLY on the Robert Smalls Parkway in Beaufort, wishes a safe 4th of July holiday for all.

The Chartered Head Boats are taking limits of various types of fish such as Vermilion Snapper & Red Porgy. Some really big Spottail Bass catches are reported in the surf & in the flats.
